Preparing Your Home for the Session

To create the best environment for your newborn portraits, a designated room or space within your home will be prepared prior to the session. This allows Melinda to create a warm, calm, and controlled space where your baby can remain comfortable throughout the session.

Melinda brings professional lighting and all posing equipment needed for the session, allowing her to create studio-style portraits within your home.

The ideal session space should:

• Allow room for Melinda’s posing table and equipment
• Be warmed to approximately 80 degrees for the baby’s comfort
• Be cleared of furniture or clutter in the shooting area
• Have enough open space for lighting equipment and safe movement around the setup

If you are unsure whether your space will work, Melinda will review photos of the room during your consultation to ensure it is suitable for the session.

2. Schedule it

Once you’ve contacted me, we’ll schedule a video consultation. During this call, I’ll get to know you and your vision for your newborn baby’s photo shoot. We’ll discuss your specific photography needs, such as the type of session you’re interested in, your preferred date and time, and any special requests you may have.

3. Planning it

To officially secure your newborn session date, I’ll prepare a contract that outlines all the essential terms and conditions. This will cover the contract, tentative session date, and other important details. As part of this step, I’ll request a session retainer which we offer various payment methods for your convenience.

Before the session day, I’ll provide you with a handy preparation guide. This will give you tips on what to wear, details about the location, and any special instructions to ensure that your photo session goes smoothly and is filled with happy moments.

4. Your Session

On the day of the session, I’ll be fully equipped and ready when I arrive at your home. My aim is to capture those extraordinary and heartwarming moments. I’m experienced in ensuring both you and your baby feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.

Everything that is setup for your newborn baby’s photo session is designed around the color scheme and options you choose prior to the session.

5. Your Photographs

About one week after the session, we will meet again in person at the studio or by Zoom to go through your beautiful gallery.  I am here to help guide you with the best products and prints that suit you and your family. Once you’ve made your selections and choose the products that you would like to purchase we will submit your order to my lab.

FAQ

When should I book my newborn session?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second or third trimester. Because in-home sessions require travel and additional setup, Melinda accepts only a limited number each month. Booking early helps ensure availability around your due date.

What age should my baby be for the session?

Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 5–14 days after birth when babies are naturally sleepier and easier to pose. Your session date is reserved based on your due date and finalized once baby arrives.

How long does an in-home newborn session last?

Most in-home newborn sessions last approximately 2–3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and safely posing your baby without rushing the experience.

Do I need a large space in my home?

Not at all. A small cleared area is usually perfect. Melinda will bring a posing table, fabrics, and lighting equipment to create a studio-style setup within your home. During your consultation, she will review photos of your space to ensure it works well for the session.

What should the room temperature be for the session?

The room used for the session should be warmed to around 80 degrees to keep your baby comfortable while being photographed.

Do you bring wraps and styling items?

Yes. Melinda brings a carefully curated selection of wraps, blankets, fabrics, and styling pieces to create timeless newborn portraits. Each setup is styled with the same care and attention used in studio sessions.

Can parents and siblings be included in the session?

Absolutely. Parent and sibling portraits are always encouraged and can be included as part of your newborn session.

What happens after the session?

About one week after your session, we will meet again either in person at the studio or by Zoom for your ordering appointment. During this time you will view your gallery and choose your favorite images and artwork.
